What Else Can Be Answered By The Number Forty-Two (42)?
#11
I may not be able to answer as to how 42 is the answer to the Ultimate question (which is a mystery in itself), but here are some mind-blowing facts :

1. It is believed that if you take any regular sheet of paper and fold it in half (which will double it's thickness), then again fold it in half...and continue this for 42 times, then that is enough to reach the moon from the Earth.

Note : This is a theoritical concept because each time you fold a piece of paper you double the number of sheet's thickness. So after 7 foldings it is 2^7= 128 sheets thick, beyond which it is not possible to fold.

Having said that just calculate 2^42, to get an intution that it is possible. (atleast on paper)

2. "Pronic number"
Any number derived as a product of two consecutive integers is a pronic number. (6 times 7 is indeed 42)

3. "Primary Pseudoperfect number "
A primary pseudoperfect number is a number such that when the prime factors of the number are inverted and added to the inverse of the number itself, they add up to the number one.
(Adding up the inverse of 2, 3, 7 & 42 gives us 1)

4. "Harshad number"
Any integer divisible by the sum of its individual digits is a harshad number. (42 is divisible by sum of 4 & 2)

Perhaps we may not be able to figure out the Ultimate question itself & how it is correlated to 42, but it can't be denied that the number 42 is mystical in itself !

Let's see.

The atomic number of Molybdenum is 42, as mentioned by Elliot Cooper.

Coincidence? I think not, because molybdenum is a very important element for humans and plants in minute quantities for proper growth.

In Kabbalistic tradition, 42 is the number with which God creates the Universe.

Wikipedia says, "42 is the only known value that is the number of sets of four distinct positive integers a, b, c, d, each less than the value itself, such that ab − cd, ac − bd, and ad − bc are each multiples of the value" AND "42 is the largest number n such that there exist positive integers p, q, r with 1 − 1/n = 1/p + 1/q + 1/r" AND some more stuff about the number.

There is an episode of Doctor Who called "42" which lasts for 42 minutes in real time.

A poll says that 42% of people who've seen "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in a theatre will see it again in one.

42 is the only number which can be factorised as 3*2*7.

Indira Gandhi, the 3'rd prime minster of India, became Prime Minister again and came in office on 14'th January, 1980. 3*14=42.

Proxima Centauri is approximately 4.2421 light years away from the Sun. 4/2*21=42.

Jokes apart, Douglas Adams randomly chose the number 42 as a joke. (Must be a pretty special number, because out of an infinite number of numbers, he randomly chose 42.)

PS: This is the 42'nd answer. And today, today is January 24. 24 is 42 backwards.
